Rectors Remarks

Thank you!  Thank you!  Thank you!

Jan and I have been so graciously welcomed into the hearts and homes of our people at All Saints, and I needed to say, “Thank you!”  Sometimes those “homes” have been at McKee or MCR; sometimes at rehab or a coffee shop; sometimes an actual home!  And the welcome into your hearts has actually been into your hearts.  Thank you!

My work as your Interim Rector was a six-month assignment, but it was so much more than either “work” or an “assignment.”  I had three goals in these last six months:  offering worship, “with a blend of healthy stable worship and modest invitations to spread our spiritual wings,” provide pastoral care for our people, and offer some teaching in topics related to the transition work in an interim period.

That famous Wise Person once said, “It isn’t ‘work’ if you love what you are doing.”  I would add that it isn’t work if you love the people with whom you get to do it.  (I almost said, “…it isn’t work if you love the people you get to do it with.”  But after the fuss I made about using good grammar, we don’t want to be dangling our participles!)

Many of you have said, “We are going to miss you.”  I usually responded by saying, “You know, my boys always say, ‘Dad, we miss you, but our aim is improving.’”  Others have said how much they have appreciated my being here.  And my usual response to that remark was to say, “You need to get out more.”

The blessings have been mutual, and they have been profound, my friends.

I have tried to offer you the model of a good priest, but I have also tried to model Jesus Christ for you.  Or what Jesus would have been as a large, old, balding, grandfatherly friend and companion.

And do you know what?  You have modeled Jesus right back at me!  You have been patient, and oh, so forgiving.  You have been incredibly charitable, and I am very, very grateful.

In a short while, Cynthia Espeseth will be here as your new Rector.  She will try to model Jesus, too, and I think she’s going to be very good at it.

And you?  Keep doing for her, and each other, what you already do so well.  Be Jesus for each other, and Jesus will take care of the rest!

Thanks, my friends and family!

Doug
